History

As written by Lena Tremeer (1878 – 1956)

Salem Mariposa HistoryThe original log church and a shed were built in the mid 1800’s on the southeast corner of the cemetery. In 1860 the first Sunday school was organized. A second shed was built to the north of the church in 1881. In 1884 an organ was purchased. In 1885 the lot where the church now stands was purchased for $60. A church and sheds were purchased in Little Britain for $400, taken down and moved to the new lot as you see in the picture. The log church and sheds were also taken down.

Salem Heritage Designation

Salem Mariposa United Church Now Designated as a Historical Site

Salem Mariposa Heritage PlaqueIn 2004, Ian Campbell, Chair of the Salem Church & Cemetery Board of Trustees, initiated the process of historical designation for Salem-Mariposa United Church within the municipality of City of Kawartha Lakes.  The project was completed by July 2005 and the dedication ceremony took place during the memorial decoration service of that year, including the planting of six heritage Canadian sugar maple trees in the churchyard.  Donna Villemaire, the municipal councillor for Mariposa, attended this service and presented a certificate.

Salem Mariposa PlaqueA commemorative plaque was requested from City of Kawartha Lakes, but the finances were not available at that time. However, the request was placed on hold but not forgotten.  On July 21, 2013, the plaque was presented to Board member Everett Davey by Bill Bateman, Chair of the Heritage Committee for City of Kawartha Lakes. The plaque is mounted permanently on the north side of the church near the new steps.
